Nintendo ended off the first month of 2018 with a bang. With their quarterly financial briefing, Nintendo provided sales figures for the Nintendo Switch and it’s software and on top of that gave quite a few new announcements.
The sales numbers are far more than impressive. Here are some of highlights;
Nintendo Switch – 14.86 million units sold as of Launch day (March 2017) through December. That may seem like a lot, and it most certainly is! The Wii U sold 13.56 million units in it’s entire 5 year life span. Within 10 months, the Switch completely outsold it! The console is currently selling faster than both the original Wii, and PS4!
Super Nintendo Classic Edition – 4 million Units!
Super Mario Odyssey – 9.07 million copies sold! The game just released at the end of October, and it already has become the best selling Switch game! It has sold almost double Super Mario 3D World on Wii U (5.57 Million), and has sold 50% better than Super Mario Sunshine on the Nintendo Gamecube (6.31 Million). Super Mario Odyssey only needs to sell 3 million more copies to become the best selling 3D Mario game of ALL TIME! (Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) – 12.76 Million). It has also sold more copies than any Wii U game that was released! (Mario Kart 8 – 8.40 million).
Splatoon 2 – 4.91 million copies sold! This is the exact same number of copies the original Splatoon sold on Wii U! It can only go up from here!
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 7.33 million copies sold! The original Mario Kart 8 on Wii U sold 8.40 million units, and was the best selling game on the platform. The Switch version is about to race right past it in sales!
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 6.70 million copies sold! The game received the game of the year award 2017 by almost every gaming publication and was a massive success! Breath of the Wild is already the 3rd best selling Zelda game of all time! Ahead of even the original The Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System!
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – 1.06 million copies sold! This is a first for the Xenoblade series to break 1 million units, and the game just launched in December!
ARMS – 1.61 million copies sold! For a brand new IP (Intellectual property) these sales numbers are very impressive!
Besides sales numbers, we also got some more information on the future of Nintendo as well as some interesting statistics during their Strategy Meeting. .
The recently announced Nintendo Labo, a build your own craft-like cardboard accessory for the Switch that functions using the built in technology in the Joy-Con controllers, is confirmed as only one of the “New ways to play” with Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo will be broadening their allowed use of Nintendo IP, and will work with other companies to provide new experiences.
75% of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (An Animal Crossing game for Smart Devices) users are Women.
Nintendo isn’t just a video game company. They also like providing new ways to play, with toys such as the recently announced Labo.
Nintendo’s CEO sometimes plays Switch games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 with his grandchildren, and they usually beat him!
At the end of the Strategy Meeting, a few major announcements were dropped.
First, the Nintendo Switch Online Service has been confirmed to be releasing in September 2018, and will have “attractive new features” that they will talk about at a later date. The Online Service was already confirmed last year, and we were given a bit of information then, including price ($20 per year), the ability to download free classic games with a subscription, and all new online features. The service was delayed from Fall of last year, and we now finally know when it will be fully released!
Secondly, an all new Mario Kart game was announced for mobile smart devices! Mario Kart Tour will be released within the next fiscal year. Sometime between April 2018 and March 2019. This is all the information we have been given, but since Mario Kart is one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises, it’s no doubt that this game will be a huge success!

Lastly, and arguably biggest of all, Nintendo confirmed their partnership with Universal Studio’s Illumination to make a Super Mario animated theatrical feature film! Originally reported by the Wall Street Journal back in November of 2017, we now have official confirmation directly from the source! The movie will be produced by both Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto, and Chris Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination Entertainment! Miyamoto has been in the talks with Chris for over 2 years about making a movie, and it’s finally happening! The movie is expected to release by 2020, around the same time that Super Nintendo World will be opening at Universal parks! Video Game movies don’t exactly have the best track record, but hopefully this curse can be lifted due to the creator of the games being in direct involvement with production!
